Here's the Lay in and tonal plan.
I'm not rendering yet. I want a good
overall drawing. Just making little form notes here and
there.

AU week 1
Hi everyone this is my first post,I know I still have problems with some parts of the anatomy and proportion, looking forward to your critiques on how to improve :) I'm still not sure how you guys do your process especially for long pose, but I'm learning a lot looking back at the old posts :) I hope we can all help each other here, glad to be part of this group.

Sterling Tian Week 4
This is 1.5 hours in. My work schedule has been wonky this week, so I'll be pumping the rest of this out tomorrow. I'm still working on the lay-in. I have a tonal plan, but it's on a hidden layer. I'll post more soon!

LP Study Wk 8 P2
3hrs in . Adding more tones. Since I had a battle plan, the rendering goes by quickly. Now plotting out areas that are gonna get a little extra love/ a little rendering.
I'm gonna keep the far leg fairly obscured so it won;t compete with the leg in front and that hand is gonna get some rendering.
Pretty much finished.

LP Study wk 8 PT 1
Here's my lay in. I keep my lines thin and not too dark. I left some of my constructions lines. I usually erase em all out leaving only " notes " for myself. I darkened the line work so you can see it better. Remember patience is key. I'll probably adjust a little bit on the drawing as I render but nothing big needs to be changed.

For poses and so on
Hey ehm dunno if it's okay to post this here, but maybe some of you find it helpful http://www.posemaniacs.com/page/2
And maybe I should try to use it more too ;)
So cheers and keep up your great work!

Sterling TianWeek 3 Part 5
Spent most of the fifth hour playing with edges and fudging with values to strengthen the focal point. For a little there, I actually felt like I had control of what I was doing!

Finally replaced my glitchy tablet!
Good solid face and good overall value.
This image looks like it's being done in parts. The overall figure
doesn't seem resolved. The body feels a little short. The limbs don't feel like they have a strong gestural line relating them together. Starts to feel like noodles.
Becareful of spot rendering. I makes an image feel spotty and not unified as a whole.. Bring up the image as a whole unit. All parts are brought up to a decent level of finish. I can see where this is going because I've seen and done it at workshop when starting out countless times. Face gets 4 hrs of attention and the body is just an add on. This is actually a very inefficient way of drawing. I try and keep my mind in the mode of traditional media even though it's digital. We tend to be more careless because digital media is so forgiving. This leads to bad starts/careless mistakes, and if done a couple of hundred times develops into a bad habit. I would recommend spending more time resolving the drawing underneath and slowing down. You'll actually get more done than if you went right into tone and rendering. Looking at all the old masters, they did a lot of studies before the final image. Although loose, they don't feel rushed. Keep in mind back in those times paints cost money and mistakes were costly. Made them work more carefully and mindfully. I'd like to bring that mindset into digital media as well.
Cheers
Bryan

Sterling Tian Week 3 part 3
This is the third hour. I started rendering, but I made sure to organize the three tones in the thumbnail before I started adding more tones. I also tried to accentuate the gesture a little bit. Any input is appreciated!

LP Study WK 7 P 1
Lay in and tones all knocked in. Now I just render a little and I'm done.
I've spent 2.5 hrs on this. Most of that time was spent on lay in and forms
That little value dot on the bottom is the value I'm using and relying on pressure
sensitivity so it feels more like a pencil.

Sterling Tian Week 3 part 1
I think the foreshortening of the figure psyched me out. I can tell that I have a weak tonal plan.
I drew over and enlarged the thumbnail to try to get more accurate.

(MV) sketch
Hello people! I'm glad to be here, and I want to learn from you! I post some sketches I did today, 40 minutes each, more or less. It's that ok? Tomorrow I'll start with a long pose!
LP Study Week 6
This week I'll do a more academic style figure drawing. It's a little different.
Notice I completely changed the compositition and lighting to be
more interesting. I want to show you that you should not be at the mercy of your reference or model. The painting up top could be taken to finish even without the model.

Sterling Tian Week 2 part 4
Hour 4. I know this is already FUBAR analytically, but what suggestions do you have for when you get this far? Do you step into color or do you keep checking value levels?
For the next hour I'm thinking about rendering little stuff like hair and some veins. Maybe brush up the edges too. I don't know what else I can do.
Sterling Tian Thumbnail Practice 1
I don't know if this is exactly on topic for a long pose study blog, but here are some 2 tone 15 minute thumbnail sketches I did for practice. I'd love to hear ideas. Maybe more contrast on some of these...

Sterling Tian Week 2 part 3
This is 3 hours in. I'm beginning to appreciate the nuances of designing before rendering. It's less about drawing exactly what you see and more about abstracting and simplifying. Leads to more efficient painting and an easier consumption for the eye.

Sterling Tian week 2 pt 2
This is 2 hours in. Hey Brian, I read your last critique and I have a request. I'm not 100% sure what a tonal plan is. Can you please do a detailed explanation? I thought a tonal plan was picking out the value of your highlight, direct light, reflective light, form shadow and maximum darkness in shadow.
Sterling Tian Week 2 pt 1
Hey, this is one hour in. I'm using lines to make my painting more accurate.
Come up with a tonal plan. Design the whole space that you have. Once you
have a good value plan. You can work on the lay in. Don't worry about all the little lumps and bumps.
Find the overall width and angles of everything. I would recommend spending about 30 min to figure out a tonal plan and an hour on the lay-in. No rendering.

Long figure study 2
Was really struggling when making a new one long study. Even with the new notes, but I'm gonna keep working at it.

LP Study Wk 6 Progress 1
Lay in underneath. Erasing out things I don't need and Leaving form hint/notes marks for me. Keeping my values simple. Notice there's no blending.
Making sure everything reads very graphically first.

Sterling Tian Week 1 pt 5
There goes the 5th hour. I'm going to practice some gestures over the weekend. I think I could have brightened the whites more too.

SterlingTian Week 1 pt4
Upped the contrast a bit by adding another tone. I think I can be a little more generous with the darks. Thank God I only have an hour left.

Sterling Tian week 1 pt 3
I went ahead and started rendering. I can see how an inaccurate drawing can lead to a lot of headaches. I'll probably be spending the next two hours fixing mistakes in the drawing. I'll practice thumbnail sketches and gestures in my free time to try to learn how to draw more efficiently.
