I think advise when I was starting will help most. If you're doing a lay in first with no value plan. I had once instructor who erased everything on my pad if I started rendering and had me start over. Make sure you're lay in is solid. No rendering. Make sure centerlines are working and angles are correct. Simplify the forms and shapes even more.
If you try to do both at once, it takes longer and when working traditionally, that's a lot of erasing. :)
