Sterling Tian Week 1

Spent an hour on this today.  I'm focusing on accuracy of the lines because I've noticed that to be a weakness of mine.  Right now I'm using negative shapes and following contour lines of the figure to draw accurately.  I can't help but feel that there is a more efficient way.

Also, I used the free transform tool as a crutch too many times.  I had a hard time fitting the figure on the canvas.  Any tips for keeping things together?

  1. Good start! I did a quick draw over. Hope it helps. I would recommend spending more time on a thumbnail drawing to work out a tonal plan. The goal is to get in the habit of designing the whole page. If you want, I can look over your thumbnails, and we can go from there.
    1.) Thumbnail
2.) Lay -in ( Gesture, shape, proportion, likeness)
    3.) Form
4.) Lighting ( If you have a solid thumbnail this stage should be fairly painless. )

    Keep going!!

  2. Thanks for the draw over and tips! What is the difference between Form and Lighting?

  3. Form and lighting are 3 dimensional ideas. Cylinders, boxes, spheres/ hybrids. Light hits the surface of the form. If you don't know what forms are being hit with light, it makes it really difficult to render. I see a lot of renderings with amorphous forms that flatten the drawing. Value change = plane change
