Sterling Tian week 2 pt 2

This is 2 hours in.  Hey Brian, I read your last critique and I have a request.  I'm not 100% sure what a tonal plan is.  Can you please do a detailed explanation?  I thought a tonal plan was picking out the value of your highlight, direct light, reflective light, form shadow and maximum darkness in shadow.

  1. Basically, breaking down your image to 3 to 4 tones. It's called value grouping as well.
Once you get this you can adjust values however you want. Howard Pyle usually made the shadows darker than they appear and lights even lighter.

You're worried about too many light sources at once. You want light and shadow to separate. In this stage there should be no blending. Highlights and bounce light are minor ideas at this point. To me highlights and reflective lights are like the windows of a house. Gotta design the whole house first before designing the windows. Work big overall ideas to small ideas.

    Hope this helps.
