Sterling Tian Week 3 Part 2

This is hour 2.  I spent the hour doing the lay in.  Any thoughts on the lay-in?  It's kind of stiff, I think.
This is the gesture/rythm that I see right off the bat.  You might see something different and find different things to accentuate.  Don't doubt your first impressions.

  1. Much better. Yes it's a bit stiff but worry about one aspect at a time.
Lay in is a 2d idea. Layins should have:
    1.)Gesture
    2.)Proprtion
    3.)Shape
Drawing is done in passes. It's not done in one shot. Slowing down reduces your chances of being inaccurate. So do a gesture pass, a proportion pass and a shape pass. Whichever order is simplest to you or for the pose.
Right now you have 2 of three; which is good. If you really want to improve on the gesture, find the average width and overall curve. There's one I see right away, and that's from her left hand down to her right foot. It actually follows through to the other arm and loops into the head.

Also keep your lines lighter. This is a bit nit picky but it's a good way to train your arm for line work. Trying to make digital and traditional feel the same as much as possible. If you drew lines that harsh on newsprint, it would take a lot of erasing to push it back.

This is a big improvement. Keep going man :)

  2. Thanks for the detailed explanation on the lay in. I don't really understand how to express the gesture, though. Is the objective to simplify the lines so that they conform to a curve?
